What Is Oud?
Oud, also called agarwood, is a dark, fragrant resin that forms inside the heartwood of Aquilaria trees native to South and Southeast Asia. A healthy tree has no scent to speak of. Only when a tree is injured or infected does it produce the resin as a defense, and it can take years for the wood to become saturated enough to be valuable.
That slow, unpredictable process is why oud has been treasured in perfumery, incense and ritual across the Middle East and Asia for centuries.

Why Oud Is So Expensive
- Rarity. Only some Aquilaria trees form the resin, so good material is scarce.
- Time. The resin builds up slowly; richer wood generally takes longer to develop.
- Labor. Finding and harvesting resin-rich wood is skilled work.
- Regulation. Aquilaria is protected under CITES, which controls international trade. It is worth asking any brand where its oud comes from.
What Does Oud Smell Like?
Oud is hard to describe because it is complex and changes as it wears. Most people notice a warm, woody, slightly smoky character, often with sweet, balsamic or leathery facets.
| Stage | What you may notice |
|---|---|
| First impression | Woody, smoky, a little sharp or leathery |
| Heart | Warmer and softer, balsamic and slightly sweet |
| Dry-down | Deep, resinous, incense-like and calm |
Oud on Hair
Hair holds fragrance well because the strands are porous and sit close to your face and collar, so a scent in your hair is noticed as you move. A woody oud note is a good fit for a hair product: it is distinctive without being sugary, and a little goes a long way. In a styling cream, the scent is a finishing touch rather than a perfume, which is why Arganiss describes it as a scent that speaks quietly.
Fragrance performance depends on hair type, how much product you use, and the weather, so we do not promise a number of hours. If you are scent-sensitive, test on a small amount first.
Oud and Argan Oil Together
Arganiss pairs aged royal oud with cold-pressed argan oil. Argan oil conditions the hair; oud gives it character. Add clay for hold and you have the base of both Natural Shine Cream and Natural Matte Cream. To learn how to wear a woody scent without overdoing it, read our beginner's guide.
